Overlevering en traditie

It is the dead who govern.
Look you, man, how they work their will upon us!
Who have made the laws? The dead!
Who have made the customs that we obey and that form and shape our lives? The dead!
And the titles to our lands? Have not the dead devised them?
If a surveyor runs a line he begins at some corner the dead set up; and if one goes to law upon a question the judge looks backwards through his books until he finds how the dead have settled it - and he follows that.

Freedom of information

  • It is a challenge to a culture of unnecessary official secrecy
  • It promotes accountability in a democracy for policies, operational activities and (very importantly) public expenditure
  • It is deterrent to corruption, impropriety, maladministration and so on
  • It improves the quality of decision-making
  • It improves confidence and trust in government
  • It brings knowledge to th people

Archivaris en zijn/haar rol

Initially, there is one thing I want to point out: The archivist’s role in the documentation of personal rights is to be an archivist. It is not our job to pretend to be lawyers or social workers. It is not for us to decide whether the documentation we are able to find will be sufficient to get reparation or not. It is neither our role to engage in client counseling. We cannot grant people justice. But we can use our knowledge to locate whatever documentation there is to be found, so that the individuals may have their cases tried at the proper authorities.

Betrouwbaarheid

If a system holds back crucial information it lies.

Information systems don't lie intentionally. But all information retrieval systems tend to lie by omission: They have little way of knowing what they contain relative to your queries. This deceit of omission is an inherent attribute of technology..

Informatiewet

The information you have is not the information you want.

The information you want is not the information you need.

The information you need is not the information you can obtain.

The information you can obtain costs more than you want to pay
